THIS WEEK'S AWARD WINNERS
KAEILA ARTS PROJECT
Six Gowrie Street students were selected to take part in a very special opportunity.
‘Yenbenal – Creating Songs & Music On-Country’ is a new, intergenerational pilot project that brings together Yorta Yorta creatives, language specialists, Elders, parents, children, and young people living in the Goulburn Murray region. Together, they will create a collection of Yorta Yorta language songs that reflect local country, stories, histories, and values.
Led by Yorta Yorta composer, musician and singer James Henry, Yorta Yorta language specialist Ebony Joachim, artist Ally Knight and supported by Kaiela Arts, the project will offer a series of workshops in Term 2. These workshops will take place in community spaces and on-country outdoors, working with different local family and community groups in Shepparton, Echuca, and Barmah/Cummeragunja.
All participants will have the opportunity to learn leangauge, write songs and sing the songs, and a professional audio and video recordings will be produced. Later, a songbook will be developed and a celebration event will be held to bring together all participants and share the outcomes of the project.
Student had their first workshop this week and thoroughly enjoyed it and are looking forward to the future workshops. This is a unique and valuable cultural and learning experience. We are very proud that students from Gowrie Street have been selected, and we are excited to see the creative and cultural journey they will go on.
